ESSENTIAL CITY GUIDE

Pisa

A maritime power, a leaning miracle and stories beyond the postcard.

Long before its tower began to lean, Pisa was one of the Mediterranean’s most powerful maritime republics. Its monuments were designed to display wealth, faith and ambition—and an engineering mistake eventually became its greatest icon.

1

Cathedral

Built at the height of Pisa’s maritime power, the Cathedral turned wealth and ambition into stone, blending influences gathered across the Mediterranean.

2

Baptistery

Built over more than two centuries, it combines Romanesque and Gothic styles—and its extraordinary acoustics can make a few notes sound like a choir.

3

Leaning Tower

The tower began leaning during construction on unstable ground. Its flaw eventually became more famous than the perfection surrounding it.

4

Camposanto

A peaceful Gothic cloister with medieval frescoes, traditionally said to contain sacred soil brought from Golgotha during the Crusades.
